An update for the ClubWe have a couple of topics to update you on as we get ready for the summer season to commence:Summer court schedule – From the 1st of October, the summer court schedule comes into effect, so please refer to the linked page for all the information you need about playing times and court availability. We encourage you to download the TeamUp app to have this dynamic view of our schedule available on your phone. We’re in the process finalising the schedule which we will share once ready.Uniforms – We’ve locked in a design and are doing some final fine tuning with our suppliers. Expect to see an announcement about these very soon.Lease agreement – While we were successful in extending our existing lease agreement with Randwick Council for 3 years until 2027, we are still waiting to hear back about our proposed changes to the existing playing times and conditions. We are expecting to receive an outcome from Council sometime between November and the end of the year.Sub-committees – We had shared a lovely dinner with our sub-committees and coaches to thank them for their efforts throughout the year so far, and to share our purpose statement and values in the lead up to summer. CBVA is run by the efforts of these amazing people (and many others who weren’t able to make it)! Thank you to Smady and Calvin for their help with organising. If you would like to get involved with contributing to the Club, please email board@cbva.org.au.
Kings and Queens of the Beach – August 2024Possibly the best end to winter there could have been: A postcard perfect day Coogee, with warm, still air, plenty of sunshine and 44 teams competing across three divisions in our Kings and Queens of the Beach tournament. The tournament format was as follows: In each division, teams would be spread across three courts, aspiring to progress up to the highest court (Court 1) at the end of each 15min round. Points are won on the King/Queen side and would be tallied up throughout each round. The top two teams moved up a court, and the bottom two teams moved down a court at the end of each round. After 4 rounds the eventual winner is the team on the top court with the most number of points. It’s different to a draw based tournament in that it is a faster, more physically demanding style of play, and harder to get into a rhythm with the constant rotation of opposition teams. It was great to see the CBVA community come together and support the other divisions by refereeing and scoring, and also staying until the end (for the support, not just the pizza). An excellent demonstration of our ‘lead, champion and cheer’ value. Of course, the long awaited post-tournament pizza & Pav was a highlight too – another way to enjoy spending time together as a community off the courts. The final results of each division are below:Mixed DivisionKing & Queen: Alice & AbubakarrRunners up: Lucas & JayneWomen’s DivisionQueens: Michaela & SabaRunners up: Alessia & IlariaMen’s DivisionKings: Gregor & JustinRunners up: Martin & LucasLink: More photos from the tournamentThank you to our supporters for providing prizes for the event: Edge Fit Gym, Chargrill Charlies, Andersen’s Ice-cream, Coogee Diggers, and Avion Australia. Another thank you to the Coogee Pavilion supporting our event with 40+ pizzas at a favourable price. Thanks again to our tournaments sub-committee members Chantal & Inés, together with Calvin, Smady and Alessia for their combined effort of organising the tournament, pizza procurement and delivery to the beach. The next tournament coming up is our annual State of Origin 4v4 event, so keep your calendars free on October 19th.
Meet some of our Juniors! At CBVA, you’ll hear a wide range of ages given for when people’s beach volleyball journey began. Some have the good fortune of an earlier start and more time on the sand, so we caught up with a few of them to hear about their volleyball experiences, aspirations and life in general. When did you start playing beach volleyball and how did it begin?Zoë: I started in 2021. I quit ballet and decided I wanted to do beach volleyball. I remember always seeing it at Coogee and thought it would be fun to try.Adelaide: I first started playing when I was in primary school before COVID. I joined because my older brother was playing and he was really into it. But then I stopped playing because of the pandemic, and ended up stopping for a number of years. I re-joined again in mid 2024. I came back to it because people were telling me I was too tall not to play (I’m in year 8 and 6’1). Also I went to the national youth championships in March to support my brother who was competing there and I thought it was really cool, and the community so great. So now I’m trying to get back into it and improve.Jasper: I play beach volleyball because of my big brother (Freddie) and my parents (Katrin & Florian). I can’t remember when I started.
Do you have any beach volleyball goals this season?Zoë: I’m going to the NDP (National Development Program) in September. I’d really like to get into Phoenix NSW state team again and get hopefully be selected for the Beijing Asia World Cup (as part of the NDP). I also would like to improve my setting.Adelaide: I was aiming to try to get selected in the NSW team, however 2 weeks ago I had some bad luck and broke my arm, so that is a setback.Jasper: I want to go to Junior Nationals again with the U14 Phoenix Team. What are some of your favourite beach volleyball memories so far?Zoë: The tournaments, going to State representing NSW and meeting lots of new people. Going to the NDP was also a great memory because I met lots of new people that are still my friends today.Adelaide: Once Marcos brought his speaker and let us have a dance party on the beach. Another time a dog escaped from its owner and hung out with us for the whole session and Marcos had to phone the owner.Jasper: Enjoying Junior Nationals with my team. Also, being a ball boy for the World Beach Pro Futures Tour was pretty cool. What are your other hobbies or interests outside of beach volleyball and how do you manage them?Zoë: I do swimming on Mondays and Fridays in the morning. I also go to the gym on a Thursday afternoon. In my spare time I like to write narratives, play video games and read.Adelaide: I play netball (another height thing) and I like singing. This year I was in my school’s musical which was fun. Finding time for everything is tough, plus Marcos wants me at the beach four times a week!Jasper: I play football and do board competition for Nippers. I love sports and if I don’t do any I am bored, which is the worst. What’s your favourite subject at school and why?Zoë: I like English because I like reading and learning about different books. I also like writing poems and narratives.Adelaide: I love history because of the interesting stories.Jasper: Sport, because then I’m not bored. What do you do to unwind and relax?Zoë: I like reading or watching a TV shows which helps me to unwind. I also like drawing.Adelaide: Well, I’m a teenager so scrolling TikTok is a big thing. I also like to cook sweet treats.Jasper: I don’t.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?Zoë: I see myself in university, studying to become a vet and still playing beach volleyball and maybe getting to the Olympics!Adelaide: I will have just finished school by then so hopefully I’m at university doing something interesting. I’d like to still be playing volleyball at least socially. I’m also starting to play indoor volleyball, so that could be a thing too.Jasper: I don’t know about 5 years… but in 8 years I will play in Brisbane with my brother!See you at the beach!
