On Sunday, June 22nd, CBVA hosted a 2×2 Mix Social Tournament to fight the off-tournament-season blues and bring the community together to the beach, despite the biting Australian Winter. And, ladies and gentlemen, it did not disappoint!2 Divisions for a total of 24 teams, including a junior team, that spent what turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day, giving their all on court. From the pools matches through the elimination phase we’ve seen some great games, with no team going down without a fight, leading up to two surely entertaining finals.Off court, the atmosphere was just as good, with a now solid number of CBVA babies hopping around, many by-standers and wall-supporters cheering throughout the day, an impromptu dancing group and lots of banter. The vibe kept vibing post tournament, with celebrations at the Pav, which kindly offered few beverages while the Board – as per tradition – took care of the pizzas. All in all, a wonderful day to remind us of how lucky we are to be able to play in such an amazing location and to be part of a truly special community. Congratulations to the winners below and all the players, and a great deal of gratitude to Inès for organising (and Anderson for helping), the Board, the sponsors and everyone that came down at the beach to support. A huge thank you to Marcos Molina for delivering an insightful and inspiring workshop on the Scientific Approach to Application and Practicability of Beach Volleyball for Juniors and Non-Experienced Players. Marcos arrived in Australia from Chile in 1993 and played a key role as one of the founding members of CBVA’s original club of friends in the early 1990s. His passion for teaching, coaching, and growing the game is as strong today as it was three decades ago. His commitment to making beach volleyball accessible and impactful for all levels is something we deeply appreciate at the club. We’re lucky to have him in our corner. Takeaways From the Workshop: Skills, Science, and SmartsMarcos reminded us that coaching isn’t just about barking orders from the sideline: it’s about understanding the why behind the what. One of the core messages was the importance of motor control and its role in identifying performance gaps, designing effective interventions, and improving skill acquisition. As Marcos puts it, “It is not what the coach knows that is important, but what an athlete understands.”He broke down key models of motor learning, such as Fitts and Posner’s three-stage model (Cognitive, Associative, and Autonomous) and Ann Gentile’s stages of movement refinement and adaptation. The workshop also highlighted: The power of external focus for learning (think “hit the target,” not “swing your arm”)The importance of drill variability to develop adaptable skillsHow to give concise, timely verbal instructions: because too much talk can do more harm than good! The benefit of contextual interference, where mixing up drills improves long-term learningWhy warm-ups matter: Marcos introduced the “Hit and Run” method, a CBVA-born approach using functional warm-up sequences to build skills right from the start. In short: six basic skills per session, high variability, clear feedback, and always keep your eye on the ball…literally! Final ThanksThanks again to Marcos for generously sharing decades of experience and giving us a practical, thoughtful session that blends sport science and real-world coaching. Thanks to those who came along and took part, your involvement helps keep the CBVA community active and thriving.
